The 13th Floor Elevators: The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators

Opningssporet “You’re Gonna Miss Me” er ei av dei beste rockelåtane som nokon gong er skrive. Den er eit fyrverkeri og eit primalskrik som er over på 2.30. Kvar gong eg høyrer den får eg lyst til å hoppe opp, skrike og skråle, gå ut og drikke øl og danse. Den er rock’n roll.
Roky Erickson, mannen bak bandet, er ein av dei store i rockehistorien. Han er ein suveren gitarist og ein vokalist med ein skrikande orginal stemme. Han står også bak ei rekke flotte rockelåtar, som til dømes er godt oppsummert på denne.
Så er han også mannen med enorme narkotikaproblem frå ung alder og store psykiske vanskar. Det tok livet av the 13th Floor Elevators.
Han tilbragte mange år på psykiatrisk institusjon, og utvikla ei rekke forestillingar som fekk innverknad på musikken (sjekk låttitlane!). Han vart besatt av vampyrar og trudde han var frå ein anna planet. Det meste av 70- og 80-talet var han inn og ut av institusjon, levde kummerlig og kom med sporadiske plater.
Det siste tiåret har han fått eit comeback. Den psykiske og fysiske helsa er betre. Han har spela mykje live og kome med plater, og han har blitt gjenoppdaga. Både som gitarist og artist har han hausta den rosen har fortener.
Han har skrive mange gode låtar. Men ingen overgår “You’re Gonna Miss Me”. Under ein versjon av denne genistreken av ei rockelåt, som også gjer eit inntrykk av han på scena.
