Leslie Winer: Witch
Det har alltid vore begrensa med informasjon om både plata og dama bak den. Den er eit heilt spesielt eksemplar som eg er veldig glad i, den liknar på lite anna. Snakkande vokal, tørre rytmar, samplingar, ein dose trip hop følelse og ein del fin akustisk gitar. Det spesielle med plata er likevel ei stemning, ei skummel kjensle, som beatet og stemmen skapar saman med nøye utvalde samplingar og gode tekstar. Det er vanskeleg å samanlikne med noko, det finst kanskje inga direkte samanlikning.
Leslie Winer var visstnok ein velkjent modell i NewYork på 80-talet. Ho hadde ei kobling til Willian S Boroughs, noko ein finn att i formen på tekstane. Ho er ein sterkt politisk tekstforfattar, med både ein feministisk og antiautoritær bodskap. Dette er såvidt eg veit den einaste plata ho har gitt ut. Leslie Winer er navnet, men plata er strengt tatt gitt ut under eit slags kunstnarnavn; det C-symbolet som du kan sjå på coveret over. På plata har ho med seg folk som Tim Simenon, Kevin Mooney og Jah Wobble. Kva skjedde? Kvifor ikkje noko meir? Eg veit ikkje, men la oss nyte den vi har.

En sein kommentar: Denne plata tipsa du meg om en gang for lenge sida, og jeg har spilt den ihjel siden da. Hvis jeg ikke har sagt det før: Takk for tipset! Det har slått meg at mens alle trip-hop-skivene som blei genierklært på midten av nittitallet (Maxinquaye, Dummy, Protection) har fått stå ganske så i fred i platehylla siden, har “Witch” vært på jevn rotasjon. Det er noe tidløst, nesten mystisk over den. Tror min favoritt er “He Was”, men hele skiva er bra.

Fra før kjente henne bare som en av mange vokalister på Bomb The Bass (a.k.a. Tim Simenon) sitt for øvrig anbefalelsesverdige prosjektalbum Clear (koster under en femtilapp på play.com), der hun (feilaktig, tydeligvis) blir kalt Leslie Weiner, og medvirker på snakkevokal over en transatlantisk telefonlinje (!) på den halvskumle If You Reach The Border. Verdt å sjekke ut.
Og nå kom jeg jo selvsagt til å tenke på mine første åttitallsmøter med sampling og rap, da en svensk DJ kom på besøk til Namdalens dype skoger og hadde med 12″ med Bomb The Bass’ Beat Dis
