Jaylib: Champion Sound
Champion Sound er møtet mellom to av dei mest interessante HipHop-artistane dette tiåret. Resultatet er ein hektisk og springane tur gjennom nesten 20 beats, dei fleste tøffe, orginale og melodiøse.
Madlib (Otis Jackson Jr) er sentral vetskystbasert produsent, MC og artist på plateselskapet Stones Throw. Han har gitt ut ei rekke plater som Madlib og sitt alter ego Quasimoto, som også gjer ein gjesteopptreden på dette albumet. Sjekk denne morosame reportasjen på Lydverket.
Jay Dee eller J Dilla (James Yancey – han døydde i 2006) var først og produsent gjennom store delar av 90-talet, med ansvar for suksesspor for A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul og Janet Jackson. Han fekk utover i dette tiåret ein viss suksess også som MC.
Desse to hadde ei tid beundra kvarandre, og vart eit team i 2003. Dei sat i kvar sin by, Los Angeles og Detroit, og sendte kvarandre beats som den andre la tekst og stemme på. J Dilla sine sløye og enkle beats fekk meir eller mindre sofistikerte tekstar av Madlib. Madlibs meir avanserte rytmar og lydbilete fekk særs lite sofistikerte tekstar (tekstane er tidvis ille) og ein rå og naken stemme av J Dilla. Det er ein del unnatak frå dette. Dei rappar i lag på fleire låtar, og har gjester på andre.
Plata er ei suveren oppvisning i kva Hip Hop kan by på, her er eit par døme.

Holla Bård Vegar. Synes det er fett at en kunnskapsminister nå kan “komme ut av skapet” som hip-hop head. Det hadde ikke skjedd for ti år siden. Hip-hop blir ofte sett ned på som sjanger, og rap en jo fortsatt et nei-ord i de eldres rekker. Dette er på tide at hip-hop blir likestilt med sjangre som rock og blues, og burde også komme inn i pensumet i musikk-pensumet i grunnskolen, siden det er en sjanger som angår dagens elever mye mer enn for eksempel “negro spirituals” og Johan Sebastian Bach. Lær ungene om ordentlig hip-hop, om den ordkunsten rap faktisk kan være, så kanskje de blir inspirerte til å skrive selv, og kanskje de skjønner at det ikke er kult å være like gangster som 50 Cent, men heller like smart og kritisk som for eksempel Immortal Tecnique. Altså er dagens appell fra min side: “Få hip-hop inn i grunnskolen!” For øvrig synes jeg du gjør en god jobb som kunnskapsminister. Peace out Funkmaster Bård Vegar!

Jeg er enig med mye av det Magne skriver i posten over meg.
Jeg tror det er veldig viktig å få hip-hop inn i pensumet for barne- og ungdomsskolen i Norge. La ungene få lære hvor lyrisk, lærerik og flott hip-hop kulturen kan være. I STEDET for at de skal lære seg til å høre på Gangster Rap, og følgelig tror at de selv er like gangster, og dermed oppfører seg voldsomt og truende ovenfor medelever o.l.
Selv fant jeg hip-hop på ett tidlig stadium i livet mitt, og fant fort fram til den ekte hip-hop kulturen, som har lært meg mang en ting, som jeg ikke lærte igjennom skole, foreldre eller venner. Noe jeg føler at har vært med i stor grad å forme meg som menneske.
Man kan se seg rundt overalt i dag, og se hvor stor innflytelse hip-hop har hatt på andre musikksjangre, samfunnet, media og ikke minst politikk (med eksempel fra det overståtte presidentvalget i USA). Det er 2009, og på høy tid å gi hip-hop den anerkjennelsen som den burde hatt for mange, mange år siden.
